Cleft lip and cleft palate are birth defects. Cleft lip is also known as cheiloschisis, and cleft palate is also known as palatoschisis. Cleft is an opening in the lip and palate. A cleft lip appears as an opening in the bones of the upper jaw and/or the upper gum.

A cleft palate occurs when the two sides of a palate do not join together, resulting in an opening in the roof of the mouth.The two plates of the skull that form the hard palate are not completely joined in cleft Palate and soft palate also seems to be clefted. When just one side of the lip is affected it is called a unilateral cleft; a bilateral cleft affects both sides of the lips.

Cleft lip and cleft palate are caused by incomplete development during early in pregnancy.
While baby is growing in womb (uterus), parts of skull, face and head gradually grow together. If these areas do not join up completely, the baby may be born with a cleft lip or palate.
Other environmental factors that may cause a cleft lip or palate include:
- Drinking alcohol and smoking during pregnancy.
- Consumption of Certain medicines. Experts also say that excessive intake of vitamin A will cause clefts.
- Late pregnancy. Older are more likely to have a baby with a cleft lip and palate.
- Pesticide exposure.
Problems
The problems associated with Cleft lip and palate includes, feeding difficulties, middle ear fluid buildup and hearing loss, dental abnormalities, and speech difficulties.
